CHRISTMAS CANDLELIGHT TOUR Saturday, December 2, 2023
Enjoy a Christmas Candlelight Tour of historic homes & churches, followed by a Candlelight Reception at Teackle Mansion in Princess Anne, MD.
The house tour will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. featuring 14 buildings - private homes, churches, public buildings and Teackle Mansion decorated for Christmas. The Candlelight Reception will follow from 6:30 to 9 p.m. House tour tickets are $25 and reception tickets are $50. Tickets for both events, if purchased together, are $70.
Properties on the tour include:
• Water’s Edge - Midcentury Modern home located on the water. Recently renovated by new owner. The architectural plan for the home, which was built in 1949, was featured in Good Housekeeping Magazine. - Linden Hill - Classic colonial architecture, built in 1750 & 1835. This house hasn’t been open to the public for several years. • McAllen House – Craftsman style bungalow was built in 1922 by Harold McAllen. • Historic Boxwood Garden – The garden dates to 1850 and was created by Handy family members who owned a house next door. • Historic Election House - located in Manokin River Park • McAllen Webster House - Built in 1880, this historic Victorian home is currently available for sale. • Sarah Martin Done House - located behind Teackle Mansion, the house is owned by the historical society and is chock-full of antiques and collectibles that are available for sale. • Teackle Mansion–Wealthy merchant-planter Littleton Dennis Teackle began construction on this Federal-era mansion in 1802 with the center section. In 1818 he added the north and south service and bedroom wings. In later years, the house was subdivided into apartments with multiple owners. The Somerset County Historical Society now owns the entire house and grounds. (The mansion will only be open from 3 to 5 p.m.)
In all, fourteen properties will be open for the candlelight tour. Four churches in the town’s historic district, St. Andrew’s Episcopal, Manokin Presbyterian, Metropolitan United Methodist and Antioch will be open, along with The Grey Eagle, the town’s police headquarters.
The Candlelight Reception at Teackle Mansion will begin at 6:30 p.m. with an oyster bar and hors d’oeuvres, followed by a catered dinner. The buffet dinner will feature roasted chicken, stuffed pork loin, roasted potatoes and vegetables. The event will include live music, a cash bar and a silent auction. There are a limited number of reservations available for the reception, so anyone interested in attending should act quickly.
House tour tickets and booklets will be available on the day of the event at Somerset Choice Station, 11731 Somerset Avenue, or from 3-5 pm at Teackle Mansion, 11736 Mansion Street, Princess Anne, MD.
